Seniors can have a challenge when a heat wave hits. Older citizens can experience heat stroke, breathing difficulties, dizziness just to name a few. Let’s look into waves that seniors can protect themselves from these record breaking temperatures across the country. It is predicted this year just could be the hottest ever recorded and many records are being broken. Summer has just started and many are not prepared.

So what are the best ways seniors can protect themselves from this searing heat wave in the summer of 2021. First and foremost is to find places to cool off. This could be as simple as heading off to your local library and enjoying the air conditioning for a few hours. Malls and local senior centers are also places you might find cooler air. Spending a few hours in a cooler atmosphere at least 3 or four hours a day will help your body stay cool.

At home there are many things you can do to cool off the rooms. Temperatures on the outside of your apartment are higher than inside so block off that heat. Shut the shades and the windows if you are facing the sun. Keep that heat out of your home. Set up fans if you have them. If you are lucky enough to have an air conditioner there is no explanation there. Many of us don’t have one and fans are second best.

Create some air flow by opening your hall door a crack if you live in a safe building and don’t have to worry about getting robbed. Of course if you don’t then keep the door locked and turn on the kitchen and bathroom out take fans. Get that air moving. Moving air is cooler.

Younger adults can hit the beach and swim all day to keep cool. When you are older you may not have this option and being out in the sun too long is dangerous. Let’s face it our skin doesn’t beat off those HV Rays like it used to. Use lot’s of high count Sun Lotion if you do go out. If you can’t afford it wear hats and light clothes to block those cancer giving rays. Getting fried out in the sun might give you a browning effect but it could also kill you quick.

After age 65, your body can’t adjust to changes in air temperature. This is one of the setbacks of getting on in life.Your body cannot fight off the sun as well as when you were younger. That puts you at risk for heat-related illnesses.

You also may be at greater risk for heat-related illnesses if you have a long-term (chronic) health condition. If you are taking medicines for illnesses you might be fighting this can effect the bodies protection against heat.

But you can still enjoy a safe summer by being careful when it gets hot.

Unless your healthcare provider has told you to limit your fluids, drink plenty of cool liquids such as water, sports drinks, or fruit and vegetable juices. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Don’t drink alcohol, because you’ll lose much of the fluid it offers. Also don’t have large amounts of caffeine.

Water should be your choice of drinks but if you are an avid coffee or Tea junkie make sure you take a little water with it if possible.

  • High blood pressure or other conditions that need changes in diet. For example, people on low-salt diets may face an added risk (but don’t use salt pills without asking your healthcare provider).
  • The inability to sweat caused by some medicines. These include water pills (diuretics), sedatives, tranquilizers, and some heart and blood pressure medicines.
  • Taking several medicines at once for different conditions. Don’t just stop taking them. Always talk with your healthcare provider.
  • Being substantially overweight or underweight
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Limited mobility, such as problems with walking that can make it hard to move out of hot environments.

How to handle heat illnesses

I don’t know about you but getting a dizzy spell on a hot summer day is no fun. Just the other day I was cruising along in the car and an overwhelming dizzy spell hit me. The temperature just began to rise and it was just around lunch. Still a pretty cool part of the day. Needless to say these dizzy spells are scary if you ever had one. Basically it feels like your having a frigid stroke or something and your going to croak.

Yikes. So I jump out of the car at a red light like a fool and stand there looking like a complete idiot I am sure. When the light changed I jumped back in the car and continued on my way. Luckily when I came to my destination as I was working at the time there was a drug store. Thanks the good lord for drugs. Naturally I went in right away and being lucky enough to have enough money I grabbed some aspirin.

One little bottle of these babies cost me around ten bucks. They said aspirin so I am hoping they were pure. These were the cheap ones at ten bucks. You almost have to have a gold mine in the back forty to buy these things now. Must be the inflation but we’ll talk about that another day. Anyways I popped four of these things and the dizziness seemed to have gone away for now. This terrible heat wave has just started so I recommend everyone should have some aspirin around. Aspirin act as a blood thinner and if you are experiencing some kind of heat stroke they are supposed to help.

Enough of the rambling and I hope this article will help you and me both get through this unprecedented heat we are going through. Don’t tell me it’s time to get rid of the carbon and cool down the planet. Just go outside for a few minutes.
