This works out to around 2000 a month income. These figures show that half of the seniors living in Vancouver don’t have enough money to live on. Half, that is a pretty scary figure and every day our fellow Zoomers are falling more and more into poverty as the cost of housing soars. Not only housing is the culprit, other factors such as extended medical are not even included.

It is time to sit back and take a closer look at what the future might unfold. Figures don’t lie. Half of our seniors are doing well and the other half are starving. Basic living in our great city has gone ballistic for our seniors. As more and more Baby Boomers enter retirement these figures just might rise. Streets could be littered with tents and sidewalks full of elderly beggars trolling for Toonies. After all a loonie don’t even buy a coffee.

Think this is Science Fiction. India might be an example. It has the highest beggar rate in the world with over 4,000,000. So how much does a beggar make. You might be surprised. Here are a few statistics of American beggars.

How much does a beggar make a day? A  report stated that some Oregon beggars outside a Wal Mart make $100k per year / $300 per day. A beggar in Oklahoma City, OK makes $60k per year, or $30 per hour average.

With that kind of money available begging on the streets. It is easy to assume that starving Baby Boomers who like their drugs will soon be storming onto the highways and byways of our great land. Yes starving Zoomers will be soon hitting you up, if not already. Last time you went down to your local store did you happen to run into a beggar. Beggars are starting to come onto the scene every way. And it’s only the beginning.

What with the cost of housing, food, medical and dental expenses, just to name a few Seniors will soon be flooding the streets begging for cash. Think not? Well think again. Tourists that visit the great City of Vancouver are shocked by the inner poverty of the City already. The situation is not getting any better and is about to spiral right out of control.

Typical Tourist’s first impression.

We decided to explore downtown by foot when we first got to Vancouver and were surprised and saddened by the homelessness and poverty in the city. In Gas town we actually felt so intimidated that we turned 180 and walk back the way we had came (this is at around 10am). If you want to see downtown use a sightseeing bus, do not walk around on you own.

Tourist’s from all over the World visit Vancouver. It is one of the Worlds leading destinations. How long this reputation will hold is anybody’s guess with more and more Seniors begging on our streets. Most of the people from around the World are easy targets for the beggars. Pockets full of traveling cash are the goal of the city’s poor. The citizens of Vancouver are used to the beggars and usually just ignore them. A newbie to our town is an easy target.

With the tourist industry booming and the Seniors poverty gaining momentum it is only natural for the poor of Vancouver’s seniors to turn to begging. The professional beggars of India have turned this into an art form. Reputable begging is an excepted occupation with no shame attached. Could this be our future. A future of the Rich giving their scraps off the table to the poor of our land.

Just maybe.
